Job Interviews
I hate doing job interviews. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to avoid them. In the past few years I’ve had a lot of them. I’ve walked away from interviews thinking I had nailed it perfectly, yet the offer did not materialized. Once I knew five minutes into the interview that there was zero chance of getting the position, and I still gave the interview of my life. I knew it was a lost cause because of a remark by the twenty-something interviewer, “someone with your age and experience has no problem finding work.” I’m in my forties.
On my last contract job, I nailed the interview and got the position. The work lasted about three months and I had no problem doing it. Same with the contract job before that. Great interview and a few months of work (which I did extremely well).
Last Thursday I had an interview. I knew coming out of it that I had blown it. My answers were often vague, my questions weren’t focused. It was well below what I am capable of doing. Today I got word that I didn’t get the position. This was not a surprise.
I do have a job. Unfortunately, it pays so poorly that we slowly slip a little more behind each month. We’re playing the juggling bills game at the moment and will soon drop the ball and be in serious trouble. If it wasn’t for the generous help of family, we’d be completely screwed.
Anyone interested can view my resume. I’m an experienced in Linux, Exim, Apache, Samba, Perl, PHP, and MySQL. I’m especially skilled at setting up highly spam and virus resistant mail servers.
I also have a background in configuration management and installation programs, although I’ve done very little of that in the past few years due to lack of opportunity.
