Right to Trial and Council Confirmed
The U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals has confirmed that the president of the United States does not have the power to detain an American citizen seized on U.S. soil as an enemy combatant. This is a good thing. If the government can declare anyone they want as an “enemy combatant”, the right to council and to trial guranteed by our Constitution would be meaningless.
I may support Bush’s actions in Iraq, but his record here at home, especially when it comes to the Consitution, is making me look for someone else to vote for president next year.
We are going after the terrorists and thugs to protect our way of life. To me, our way of life is only possible because of our Constitution. Destroying the Constitution in the process defeats the whole purpose.
